Venue, Category & Host

Venue, Category & Host

Every event in Buzz links to three reusable records: a Venue (where it happens), a Category (how it's grouped and how its public page presents), and a Host (who is running it). You set these up once in Desk and then pick them when you create an event — the same venue, category, or host can be reused across many events.

This page walks you through creating each one.

Event Category

A category groups related events (for example Conferences, Meetups, Webinars) and supplies the metadata used on the event's public page.

Go to Event Category in Desk and create a new record.

Fields you'll fill in:

  • Enabled — on by default. Turn it off to retire a category without deleting it.
  • Slug — the URL-friendly identifier. Leave it blank and Buzz fills it in for you on save, derived from the category name (lowercased, with underscores turned into hyphens). Slugs are unique, so two categories can't share one.
  • Description — short text describing the category.
  • Banner Image — the category's primary image (this is also the record's list image).
  • Meta Image — the image used for social/link previews (Open Graph) when a page for this category is shared.
  • Icon SVG — raw SVG markup for an inline icon.

Category is required on every event.

Webinar note: when an event's category is named Webinars, the event form reveals its webinar-specific settings. Keep that exact category name if you rely on the Zoom webinar integration.

Event Venue

A venue holds the address and the map that appears on an event's public page. Venues are named by you (you're prompted for a name when creating one) so you can reuse "Main Auditorium" or a hotel across multiple events.

Go to Event Venue in Desk and create a new record.

Fields:

  • Address — required. The human-readable address shown to attendees.
  • Type — how the map is rendered. Choose one of:
    • Embed Google Maps
    • Open Street Map

The remaining fields depend on the Type you pick:

Embed Google Maps

Paste the embed snippet into Google Maps Embed Code. To get it, open the place in Google Maps, click Share, choose Embed a map, and copy the HTML.

Buzz automatically rewrites the fixed width and height in that snippet to 100% on save, so the map scales to fit wherever it's displayed — you don't need to edit the markup.

Open Street Map

Enter Longitude and Latitude (stored to 9 decimal places). On save, Buzz builds a GeoJSON point from those coordinates and stores it in the read-only Location map field, which then shows the pin in the form. Leave Location alone — it's generated for you and can't be edited directly.

When to attach a venue: on the event, Venue is only required when the event's Medium is In Person. Online events skip it.

Event Host

A host represents the organization (or person) running the event — its branding shows on the public event page. Host is required on every event, and each event links to a single host.

Go to Event Host in Desk and create a new record.

Fields:

  • Logo — the host's logo (also the record's list image).
  • By Line — a short tagline shown alongside the host name.
  • Country — links to the Country list.
  • Address — the host's address.
  • About — a rich-text description.
  • Social Media Links — a table of the host's social profiles (see below).

The Social Media Links child table lets you list the host's social profiles. Each row has a single required URL field (validated as a URL). Add one row per profile — Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Instagram, and so on — and they appear with the host on the event page.

Next step

With a category, venue (for in-person events), and host in place, you're ready to create an event and link them together.
